Hi friends! I don’t know about you, but this quarantine life has really been testing me lately. Every spring/summer my family and I do a lot of traveling. This year that has not been the case obviously, but with social distancing on my mind we found a little quarantine getaway that managed to get us “out” of the house for a few hours while still avoiding the crowds. What’s the activity you ask? Strawberry farm picking!
Have you ever picked strawberries before? This was our first time. I found a farm offering private 30 minute pickings in Poteet, Texas, which is about an hour from San Antonio, so I called and made a reservation. Yes, if you are in the San Antonio area, most of the farms are offering these private pickings for just a few more weeks, but you MUST call ahead to book because it is quite the popular social distancing activity. So, my husband, son, and I jumped in the car and headed out on our little adventure, masks and all!

It’s quite the scenic drive to Poteet, Texas. Along the way, you’ll pass farms with animals and lots of Texas wildflowers.
Although Poteet is a small little town, they are Texas famous for their annual Poteet Strawberry Festival which draws tens of thousands of people every year. I’ve actually attended for the past 6 years. This year however, the festival was cancelled due to covid-19, so I’m glad we were still able to find a way to support the local farmers by visiting their farm and buying some yummy strawberries. A short hour later we had arrived!
This is Kosub Farm, an 8th generation family farm with a long history in the area. The farm it’self was so cute, so much charm and character. It was so peaceful with nobody around for miles. It was crazy to think that just an hour before we were driving down the busy highways of San Antonio, and now we had arrived at a strawberry oasis!
We arrived in the early afternoon around 11am. We were the first visitors this day. I had brought a basket to use just in case, but as it turns out they sell the cutest mini baskets for picking there, so I opted to use theirs instead. I was pleased to see that they still had many rows left of strawberries to pick!

As I mentioned already this was out first time picking strawberries. We did our best to look for the biggest red ones we could find. My son had a blast picking them. This is definitely a great family activity to do any year, but of course this year it felt extra VIP since it was a private picking.
I decided to dress festive for the occasion. This floral off the shoulder dress comes in multiple colors/patterns from Express. It’s super flattering and runs TTS. We took photos and picked strawberries until our basket was full and our time was up. Then we headed in to the little store to do some shopping. They had strawberry everything including jam, salsa, soap, and accessories like jewelry and bows. It was fun looking around. Besides purchasing the basket and strawberries we picked, we also picked out some jam for ourselves, and for my parents who were back at our house watching Audrey!
After finishing up our shopping we met with the Farm owner who was nice enough to give us a little history lesson behind the farm. She also explained to us how the strawberry growing happens ever year. She said that by July the crops would die off, and the replanting would start in October. I’m hoping that next year we can make it back, this time with Audrey too! As we made our way back to the car, we stopped for a few more cute photos.
Another reason why I love little trips like this, is because the drives are always entertaining themselves. On the way back we spotted a roadrunner trying to race us, a Longhorn, falcon, herd of cows, horses, and even a pony! At one point, my husband pulled over to pick some flowers for me 🙂 So sweet. I know I’m lucky!

If you live in the San Antonio area, you should have a lot of farm choices in the Poteet area (just call ahead to book). If you aren’t in this area I hope you can find somewhere close enough to you that offers strawberry pickings. Just remember to avoid the crowds.
